The Shaldon Road scheme is being delivered by national contractor United Living in partnership with United Communities and the Bristol Community Land Trust, with the support of Bristol City Council and Homes England. The scheme will integrate community development with high levels of energy efficiency and environmental enhancements.
Built to PassiveHaus principles, the energy efficient properties will provide owners with a high level of tenant comfort while using very little energy for heating and cooling, minimising each home’s carbon footprint. The development will include two, three, and four bedrooms houses with a mixed tenancy of shared equity and affordable rent.
Constructed using a single skin Porotherm block which will deliver improved thermal properties over traditional construction and encase the most efficient of internal renewable heat technologies within.

Solar PV panels will also feature in the development further reducing costs and supporting a green transport plan which includes electric car charging points, a car share scheme and improved pedestrian and cycle access.
Communal green space around the homes is also being created with a dedicated and protected green corridor for biodiversity and wildlife including bats, birds, bees and other insects.
In addition to the development’s ultra-green credentials, Shaldon Road is adopting a ‘self-finish’ approach, one of the biggest of its kind ever undertaken in Bristol.
The ‘self-finish’ model will see future residents getting involved in making design decisions which will enable them to tailor their new homes interior. Encouraging owners to undertake physical works on their properties to include second fix carpentry, fitting kitchens and decorating aimed at making the properties even more affordable. Coupled with the lower energy costs associated with the ‘PassivHaus’ design principles and renewable technologies, the project hopes to set a new standard for a truly sustainable community development.
